Our Story

The Birth of the
Grace & Glory District

AG Lagos West District — known as The Grace & Glory District — was carved out of Lagos District and came into existence on the 1st of May 2024. This was after the leadership of Lagos District under the revered Rev Dr. JNG Okafor had seen the need to create a new unit, as the then Lagos District was mature for it and to continue the growth of the work.

The request got the approval of the General Council, and the name Lagos West District was chosen. The first Council Meeting was conducted in March 2024 at Bethel Camp, Sagamu, where the pioneer Presbytery was elected into office.

The new district kicked off with 16 sections. Within the first few months, Alimosho and Ijeododo sections were created. Not long after, Akesan, Oshin, and Command Sections followed — bringing the number to 21 sections under two years of existence.

From the outset, the hand of God has been mighty upon this district: numerical growth, territorial expansion through purchase of new landed properties, and financial increase. One of the most remarkable achievements is that within two years, Lagos West District purchased its own Secretariat and DS residence — a record in the General Council of Assemblies of God Nigeria.

Our Roots

The Assemblies of God in Nigeria

Assemblies of God Nigeria traces its earliest beginning to the life and works of Augustus Ehurie Wogu who became born again in 1930. He returned to Umuahia where his preaching converted the likes of George Mnorom Alioha, Nathaniel Umechuruba, Marcus Asonye, and Joseph Asonye — the crop of early fathers and leaders of the church.

Between 1931 and 1935, these young men and women at Old Umuahia, Abia State, were reading religious periodicals about people receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues. They became convinced that the Pentecostal experience was for them too, and within a short while many received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in 1934.

After much prayer, they requested the American Assemblies of God to send a resident missionary. In June 1939, Rev. & Mrs. Williams Lloyd Shirer brokered an affiliation agreement, and “The Church of Jesus Christ” was officially renamed “Assemblies of God.”

Rev. and Mrs. Everrest L. Philips arrived in February 1940, and the work grew rapidly. A Bible School was established at Old Umuahia, and a Printing Press at Aba — both still operational today. That one Bible School has grown to ten schools strategically located across the country.
